Video Conference

Thank you to all of you who came out today to support your kids!  We had some difficulties pulling it off, but when we FINALLY got to it, it was very cool.  I apologize to those of you who had to rearrange your schedules to be there and might not have been able to stay to see the conference.  Everything had worked perfectly in the trial run, but technology is not always predictable!  The kids did a GREAT job.  In fact, the teacher from Canada commented on how well our kids read their scripts!  I will have pictures posted here soon, and Mrs. Goodwin should have the whole video conference posted on the school website as well.  Once again, I appreciate your support of our class and your children.  Thanks for showing your kids that you value education!

A Southern Feast

Today we talked about southern traditions and how we, in Alabama, celebrate weddings, decorations, religions, and other special days.  We learned what typical foods we might have at such a celebration.  We sampled fried chicken (thanks to Chick-fil-a and KFC), sweet potatos, cornbread, and pecan pie.  My class’s consensus was:

Chicken:  Yum!

Sweet Potatos:  Yuck!

0A Magnificent Monday!

Wow, where has January gone?  I just can’t believe we’ve been back at school for almost a monthy already.  We’ve been doing some really exciting things and have had some changes in our class.  We got a new computer table last week, which has led to a complete classroom re-do.  It’s so funny to see the kids’ faces when they come in and things are different and they can’t find their desks!

This week we’re starting a new unit in reading with the theme of “treasures.”  This week we’re studying how we surprises are treasures and how we celebrate special days, especially in Alabama.  We will be learning about special days in Alabama, and even sampling a typical Alabamian meal with corn bread, fried chicken, sweet potatoes, and cornbread!

You may have heard a little about the cutbacks in education lately.  Our classroom supply money is frozen at the moment, and there are some things we are running low on.  If you want to help, here are some things we could use:

copy paper, PENCILS*, index cards, crayons*

*Students should have their own supply of pencils and crayons.  I am depleting my supplies by giving these items to students.  Please ask your child if he/she needs new pencils and crayons.

Please go to our wiki at http://rogers1st.wikispaces.com to complete this week’s assignment.

Please post a comment to let me know you’ve been to this site.  I need to know how many people are visiting and who they are.  Just click “comment” at the top of the post.

I am posting a video of a butterfly skit we did two weeks ago when we studied butterflies.  (click link below)

Inauguration Day

We didn’t let today’s historical events  get passed us!  The whole school participated in inauguration day events.  Third-fifth grade students met in the lunchroom to watch the entire event and then communicated with a school in California through live web-casting.  We ate lunch in our room and watched the president and vice-president take their oaths.  Then, five of my students, along with other first grade students here, did a live web chat with a school in New  Jersey.  Both schools took turns letting students share their writing about the inauguration and President Obama.  The students then asked each other questions.  We found out that it was about 15 degrees in New Jersey and that there was 4 inches of snow outside their school!  We had a very exciting day!

Happy New Year!

I’ve been having some problems with this site changing my password, and I can only retrieve it from school.  I usually blog from home, so this has caused some problems.  I think I have resolved the problem, and hope to get back on track!

This week we have started something new and exciting that I am very proud of.  We not only are rotating to reading stations now, but we also are doing math centers!!!  The kids are very excited about this.  They will go to a different center each day as soon as I check their daily math work.  This gives them a chance to review their math skills in a fun way, and gives me a chance spend more time with students who need extra help!

We are studying the life cycles of butterflies this week.  Please remember to send a toilet paper tube (with out the paper, of course), so that we can make a chrysalis on Friday.

I have some housekeeping type of chores that need to be done this week (stapling papers, etc.), so if you’d like to come in and help, please let me know!

I have also just realized that I can email AR reports, so if you ever want a list of all the tests your child has taken this year, just send me an email and I’ll get that to you.

Please keep checking back for weekly updates!
